Photo print sizes: pixels and aspect ratios
Use the size of the image area, not the outside of the frame. Dimensions below are portrait; swap width and height for landscape.
Pixel sizes for photo prints
| Print (inches) | Ratio | Pixels at 150 PPI | Pixels at 300 PPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 × 6 | 2:3 | 600 × 900 | 1,200 × 1,800 |
| 5 × 7 | 5:7 | 750 × 1,050 | 1,500 × 2,100 |
| 8 × 10 | 4:5 | 1,200 × 1,500 | 2,400 × 3,000 |
| 8 × 12 | 2:3 | 1,200 × 1,800 | 2,400 × 3,600 |
| 11 × 14 | 11:14 | 1,650 × 2,100 | 3,300 × 4,200 |
| 12 × 18 | 2:3 | 1,800 × 2,700 | 3,600 × 5,400 |
| 16 × 20 | 4:5 | 2,400 × 3,000 | 4,800 × 6,000 |
| 20 × 30 | 2:3 | 3,000 × 4,500 | 6,000 × 9,000 |
150 and 300 PPI are calculation examples, not a quality guarantee. Use the print provider's requested density. Focus, cropping and viewing distance still matter.
Match the shape before resizing
A 2400 × 3600 photo fits 4 × 6 or 8 × 12 without changing its ratio. To fill an 8 × 10 print, crop it to 2400 × 3000: 600 pixels are removed from its height. That remaining image gives 300 PPI at 8 × 10 inches.
To keep every edge instead, choose fit with borders. Stretching the photo to the new ratio distorts it.
