What is an AVIF file?

AVIF stores AV1 image data in a HEIF-based container. It can represent transparency and high-dynamic-range content, but the receiving software must support the features used by the file.

Where it fits

AVIF can be useful for smaller web images. Export from the original, then compare detail and file size with your current format.

Do not compare quality numbers directly

An AVIF quality value of 70 and a JPEG value of 70 are not a promise of equal quality. Each encoder uses its own controls. Judge the outputs, not the matching numbers.

Check where the file will be used

Test the AVIF in the app or upload form where you need it. Keep the original in case you need another format.
