HEIC and HEIF: what is the difference?

HEIF names a container format. HEIC is commonly used for HEIF images compressed with HEVC. A HEIF file can contain more than one image.

When an app will not accept the file

Keep the original. Open it in an app that supports the file, then export a JPEG or PNG copy that the receiving service accepts. Renaming .heic to .jpg does not convert the image.

Check the exported copy

Compare the exported copy with the original. Check its orientation, colors and dimensions. If the original held several images, check which ones were exported.

On Apple devices

Apple documents built-in HEIF handling and ways to export compatible copies. Conversion can also happen during sharing. Check the resulting file rather than assuming the original was sent unchanged.
